Six awards to nominate for

Our purpose is to develop young people through school sport and support schools to maximise opportunities for every student to play. The Victorian School Sports Awards celebrate excellence by recognising the outstanding sporting performances of students, teachers, schools and community members from government primary and secondary schools.

Through these awards, we champion the value of school sport and connect our students with pathways to reach their full potential.

Celebrating Excellence and Leadership

Each year, the Victorian Department of Education honours those who have shown incredible dedication to sport. Whether on the field, in the classroom or through community leadership, we celebrate the achievements of our mainstream and multiclass participants.

Award Categories

There are six prestigious categories that recognise different areas of sporting excellence:

Individual Sporting Achievement (Sporting Blue) Award: For students who show outstanding talent and skill in their chosen sport.
Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership Award: For those who demonstrate exceptional leadership and influence.
Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award: Recognising high-level performance and dedication.
Outstanding Student Official Award: Celebrating the vital role of student umpires, referees and officials.
Outstanding Teacher Contribution Award: For teachers who go above and beyond to support school sport.
Outstanding School and Community Partnership Award: Recognising successful links between schools and local sporting communities.

Award Categories and Criteria

We celebrate excellence across six distinct categories. Each award recognises a different way that sport enriches our schools.

Nominate for any of the six awards

This award is for government school students competing in the SSV interschool sport program or the Team Vic program.
- Inclusivity: We encourage nominations for students of all abilities, including multiclass participants. The panel uses its discretion to ensure fairness for all.
- Winning Limits: A student can win this award for a specific sport once during primary school and once during secondary school.

Named after Australian basketball legend Lindsay Gaze, this award recognises a student who shows exceptional leadership in sport, school and the community.
- Diverse Roles: Nominees can be players, coaches, umpires or administrators.
- What We Look For: Evidence of increasing participation, mentoring others and promoting inclusive opportunities for all.
- Endorsement: The sporting organisation the student has assisted must endorse the nomination.

This award is for students who reach the highest levels of sporting success.
- High Performance: Achievements must typically be at an International or National level.
- Verification: Evidence must be verified by the relevant State or National Sporting Organisation.
- Limited Award: Only one primary and one secondary student receive this award each year.

This award celebrates teachers who show outstanding dedication to sports in the SSV interschool or Team Vic programs.
- Limited Award: Only one primary and one secondary teacher receive this award each year.

We celebrate schools that go above and beyond to engage students in sport.
- Purpose: This award is for schools that improve student outcomes through intra-school and inter-school participation.
- Connections: We look for sustainable partnerships between schools and local sports clubs.
- Leadership: Schools can self-nominate or nominate another school.
