Celebrating Excellence and Leadership

The Victorian School Sports Awards celebrate excellence by recognising the outstanding sporting performances of students, teachers and schools each year.

These awards support our role to champion the value of school sport and celebrate and recognise achievements by students, teachers and schools.

Through these awards, the Victorian Department of Education recognises those from government schools who have shown incredible dedication to sport.

Award Categories

There are six prestigious categories that recognise different areas of sporting excellence:

Individual Sporting Achievement (Sporting Blue) Award: For students who show outstanding achievements in a sport aligned to School Sport Victoria.
Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership Award: For those who demonstrate outstanding leadership in sport, school and the community.
Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award: For students with outstanding achievements in their sport.
Outstanding Student Official Award: Celebrating the vital role of students as administrators, coaches or umpires.
Outstanding Teacher Contribution Award: For teachers who have demonstrated outstanding contribution to school sport.
Outstanding School and Community Partnership Award: Recognising schools maximising student participation and with successful local sporting community partnerships.

Nomination Guidelines

Who can nominate?

Nominations must be submitted by one of the following:

School Principals
School teachers or school staff members
School Sport Victoria coordinators or staff members
Team Vic team officials
State Sporting Organisation representative
Local sports club representative

Please note that we cannot consider nominations from students, parents or family members.

All nominations must have the endorsement of the nominees school Principal.

Nominee Requirements

All nominees are to have been in the position/category for which they are being nominated in the calendar year of their nomination.
Nominees need to be a government school student, teacher, or staff member, in the calendar year of their nomination.
Sporting achievements, in most instances, would need to be at a State, National or International level.
Eligibility and evidence required for each award is outlined in further detail under each award category.
All nominees are required to meet the requirements listed in School Sport Victoria's Code of Conduct, School Sport Australia's Code of Conduct and the sporting organisation administering the competition for which the student / teacher / school is being nominated.

Process

Nominations are submitted via the SSV website.
A separate nomination form is required for each nominee.
After the closing date, the Chief Executive Officer will establish a sub-committee to assess nominations.
The recommendations of the panel are reviewed and ratified by the Chief Executive Officer and the decisions will be final.

We celebrate excellence across six distinct categories. Each award recognises the different aspects of sporting achievement and leadership.

Nominate for any of the six awards

- This award is for students with outstanding achievements competing in sports delivered by School Sport Victoria in the interschool sport program or the state Team Vic representative program in the calendar year of nomination.
- Students cannot be nominated for this award for competing in sports not delivered by School Sport Victoria.
- Achievements: Achievements must be accurate and may be checked with the relevant sporting organisation.
- Inclusivity: Nominations are encouraged for students with disability, under a multiclass category for certain sports and at the Awards panel’s discretion for all other sports.
- Winning Limits: A student can win this award for a specific sport once during primary school and once during secondary school.

- Named after Australian basketball legend Lindsay Gaze, this award recognises a student who shows outstanding leadership in sport, school and the community.
- Diverse Roles: Nominees can be for a player, coach, umpire, administrator or a combination of these roles, in one or more sports.
- What We Look For: Nominations are required to show evidence of any / all of the following:
- Endorsement: The sporting organisation the student has assisted must endorse the nomination.
- VicHealth is proud to support this award in the promotion of community and school sport.

- This award is for students for outstanding achievement in any sport.
- Achievements in most instances would need to be at an international or national level.
- Evidence: Evidence of achievement must be accurate and verified by the relevant State or National Sporting Organisation.
- Limited Award: This award is available only to one primary and one secondary student each year.

- This award recognises students for their performance as an administrator, coach or umpire.
Nominate Now
- This award celebrates teachers who show outstanding contribution to sports delivered by School Sport Victoria in the interschool sport program or the state representative Team Vic program in the calendar year of nomination.
- Teachers cannot be nominated for this award for sports not delivered by School Sport Victoria.
- Limited Award: This award is available to only one primary and one secondary teacher each year.
Nominate Now
- This award is for schools that are maximising student participation in school sport, including intra-school and interschool sport level.
- It also recognises schools that have developed successful and sustainable partnerships with their local sport community regarding sports participation opportunities for students and teachers as players, coaches, umpires / officials, or as administrators.
- Nominations are encouraged to include other initiatives that may positively influence student participation, such as staff engagement programs, student coaching and leadership initiatives.
- Nomination: Schools are expected to self-nominate or nominate another school for this award.
- Limited Award: This award is available to only one primary and one secondary school each year.
