State Track and Field

Following School Sport Victoria’s (SSV’s) annual review of interschool sport rules, and with feedback from all 8 SSV regions, SSV has removed hurdles from secondary interschool track and field for boys and girls in 2026.

This decision reflects a number of important considerations:

• there have been consistently low numbers of student entries for hurdles across each age group at Region and State level
• some SSV regions do not have access to suitable hurdles equipment to run safe and effective events
• concerns about student safety, particularly where students may not have adequate training given the technique and hurdle height.

SSV encourages any students interested in hurdlers competition to enter the Athletics Victoria - Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships to be held on 1-4 October 2026 at Lakeside Stadium. Details for the event can be accessed via the Athletics Victoria website.

There are no changes to primary hurdles in 2026.
