State Track and Field

Following School Sport Victoria’s (SSV’s) annual review of interschool sport rules, and with feedback from all 8 SSV regions, SSV has removed hurdles from secondary interschool track and field for boys and girls in 2026.

This decision reflects a number of important considerations:

• there have been consistently low numbers of student entries for hurdles across each age group at Region and State level
• some SSV regions do not have access to suitable hurdles equipment to run safe and effective events
• concerns about student safety, particularly where students may not have adequate training given the technique and hurdle height.

SSV encourages any students interested in hurdlers competition to enter theAthletics Victoria - Victorian All Schools Track and Field Championships to be held on 1-4 October 2026 at Lakeside Stadium. Details for the event can be accessed via the Athletics Victoria website.

There are no changes to primary hurdles in 2026.
