School Sport Australia (SSA) presents a range of SSA Championships on an annual basis. These Championships occur all around the country, with opportunities not only for student athletes, but also for student officials to represent their state as a member of Team Vic.
SSV recognises that students are passionate about following a range of different pathways in sport beyond either playing or officiating. In 2025, SSV is offering a pilot program for students who are interested in pursuing state team representative opportunities as student assistant coaches.
For 2025, the opportunity to apply for a role as a student assistant coach will be offered in the following sports:
15 Years and Under Volleyball
15 Years and Under Australian Football
12 Years and Under Football (Soccer)
18 Years and Under Football (Soccer)
SSV is seeking an expression of interest from interested students who wish to represent their state as a student assistant coach. Prospective students will go through a process that includes the following steps:
Submission of an online application, including the following documents:
Shortlisting of eligible applicants
Interview of shortlisted applicants (preferably with parent/guardian present)
Notification of outcome
Students selected to represent SSV at the SSA Championships are considered full members of the Team Vic team in that sport, participating in all experiences that the selected student athletes participate in. Additionally, student assistant coaches will be mentored through their participation at the SSA Championship event.
SSV may only provisionally select student officials who meet the following criteria:
of an appropriate age dependent on the SSA Championship they are applying to be selected for - generally older than the Championship age group
hold an appropriate level of accreditation
have a reasonable level of experience - which is to be approved by the relevant National Sport Advisor
have permission from their school principal to attend the SSA Championship
If selected, student assistant coaches will be invited to assist with the selection trials and team training in the lead up to the SSA Championship event, as well as take part in the team presentation and photo session.
Families are responsible for their own child’s travel arrangements, including transport, accommodation and supervision whilst attending the Championship. Families can also look to utilise SSV’s fundraising partner, the Australian Sports Foundation to support with the costs of participation.
Registrations for interested student officials are now open.
