Primary Competition Rules
These rules apply to State, Region, and Division competitions. Variations to these rules at Region and Division levels are found on the relevant pages of the SSV website.
- State Format: Split Round Robin, Cross-Over Semi-Finals, and Final.
- Match Schedule: Available on the SSV website via the Volleyball Draw. A pre-championships briefing will be held for all teams.
Volleyball is conducted under FIVB rules, unless otherwise stated. Matches are played as the best of three rally point sets.
- Set Scoring: * Sets 1 & 2: Played to 20 points (2-point advantage).
- Set 3: Played to 15 points (2-point advantage).
- Timed Matches: Matches are 40 minutes (plus 5-minute warm-up). No time-outs or substitutions are permitted in the final 5 minutes.
- Clock Expiry: If the clock expires during a rally, the rally is completed and the point counts. If the game is mid-set, the score counts as a set if the leading team has reached the required point threshold (13 points for set 1-2; 8 points for set 3) with a lead of 2 or more points.

- Points: 4 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 0 for a loss.
- Tie-Breaker (Round Robin):
- Head-to-head result.
- Set percentage.
- Points percentage.
- Finals Result: If points are equal, a "golden point" is played (served by the winner of the last point).
- Team Size: Maximum of 15 players per day; 6 named per game.
- Substitutions: 12 substitutions allowed per set. Libero players must wear a contrasting shirt.
- Uniforms: Matching shirts and shorts with visible numbers on the front and back. Incorrect dress incurs a one-point penalty per set.
All teams must perform match duties during the day, including during "byes."
- Duty Requirements: * One second (net) referee (must provide a whistle).
- Two competent scorers.
- Two lines-people.
- Equipment to Bring:
- Match leather volleyball.
- Towel.
- First Aid Kit (appropriate for location).
- Sports Tape (Teams must provide their own tape and manage their own injury prevention strapping).
Note: An up-to-date team sheet including uniform numbers must be submitted to the convener on the day of the competition.
