School Sport Victoria (SSV) plays a vital role in Victorian education by enabling students to play and participate in sport, championing the lifelong value of school sport, and connecting school pathways directly with community sporting opportunities.
Representing Victoria as part of Team Vic is a wonderful opportunity for your family. Being selected provides your child with incredible opportunities for personal growth, lifelong friendships, national competition, and participation in both educational and sporting excursions. You can feel confident knowing that our dedicated Team Officials run a completely fair and transparent selection process involving carefully designed guidelines and trial activities, keeping parents, students, and teachers fully informed every step of the way.
Selection Guidelines
Tournament dates: Monday, 15 to Friday, 19 March, 2027.
The Experience: School Sport Australia Championships consists of both educational and sporting components. Being a member of a School Sport Victoria Team Vic representative team provides the opportunity to be involved in all educational and sporting excursions and aim for national selection.
- Age Limits: Trialists must be 13 to 19 years of age as of 31 December 2027.
- School Membership: Trialling for Team Vic is only possible if your child's school is a financial member of School Sport Victoria (SSV) for 2027. SSV will contact you if the school your child attends is not a financial member.
- Official Endorsement: Selection is not confirmed until schools endorse their student's participation in the SSA Championships as a representative of their school and SSV.
- Sport-Specific Eligibility: All trialists must be current financial members of Aus Triathlon to be eligible for selection.
- Multiclass Eligibility: Multiclass trialists must comply with the multiclass categories, classifications, and descriptions for the 2027 School Sport Australia Championships.
- Draft Legal Certification: The 2027 School Sport Australia Championships will be conducted in a draft legal format. Trialists must be certified as 'draft legal,' with this credential listed on their Aus Triathlon online membership.
- Trial Registration Requirements: Trialists MUST register to try out for Team Vic by Friday 4 December 2026. Trialists MUST also register for one or both identified selection events before the specified dates using both Gameday and the specific event registration links. Trialists who enter incorrect or other events will not be considered.
- Equipment Rules: Time-trial bikes are not permitted. Clip-on bars, time-trial bars, or aero bars must not be attached to or used on the bike.
- Wetsuit Rules: Trialists must be familiar with wetsuit requirements for selection events by referring to the AusTriathlon Race Competition Rules.
Trial One (Junior 13-14 Years: Selection Event 1 | Intermediate 15-16 Years and Senior 17-19 Years: Selection Event 1)

- Distances: Junior 13-14 Years (300m swim, 10km cycle, 2km run); Intermediate 15-16 Years (500m swim, 15km cycle, 4km run); Senior 17-19 Years (750m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run).
Trial Two (Junior 13-14 Years: Selection Event 2 - 2XU Triathlon Series Fun Tri)

- Event: 2XU Triathlon Series - Race 1
- Address: Elwood
- Distances: 150m swim, 7km cycle, 1.2km run.
- Requirement: Trialists born in 2013-2014 entering this race must select the Fun Tri event.
(Intermediate 15-16 Years and Senior 17-19 Years: Selection Event 2 - 2XU Triathlon Series Sprint)
- Date: Sunday, 6 December 2026

- Event: 2XU Triathlon Series - Race 1
- Address: Elwood
- Distances: 500m swim, 20km cycle, 5km run.
- Requirement: Trialists born in 2008-2012 entering this race must enter the 2XU Sprint Series Race.

Attendance and Exemption Policies
- Final Trial Attendance: Participation in the designated selection races is mandatory for selection.
- Incomplete or Cancelled Events Exemption Policy: If a selection event is cancelled or cannot be conducted as a complete triathlon (for example, if the swim or another leg is cancelled), the altered event will not be used for triathlon selection. All six automatic team positions and both emergency positions will instead be determined from the results of the other completed triathlon selection event.
- Managing Conflicts of Interest: Where there may be a perceived or actual conflict of interest, such as trial coordinators assessing the selection of a friend or relative, this must be communicated to SSV and a plan to manage the conflict will be developed and implemented.
Team Officials run a selection process that is fair and transparent. This process involves the design of guidelines and trial activities, assessment of students, and ensuring students, parents, and teachers are made aware of this process.
- Trial Criteria: Trialists are required to participate in the identified selection events to be considered for the team. Selection is based directly on trial performance. The top three eligible athletes at Selection Event 1 receive automatic selection and are removed from consideration at Selection Event 2. The first three eligible athletes at Selection Event 2 who have not already been selected receive the remaining three team positions. The next eligible athlete from each race becomes an emergency. If a selected athlete subsequently withdraws, selection rolls down to the relevant emergency.
- Match Performance and Execution: Strong performance in selection events (top 3 finish), carrying out skills under pressure, and showing an adequate level of fitness.
- Focus and Tactical Awareness: Concentration and focus during events, understanding the rules of the sport, and the ability to listen to advice.
- Mindset and Teamwork: Being a team player, showing a strong sense of team spirit, demonstrating good sportsmanship, and communicating/cooperating effectively with teammates and Team Officials.
- Emotional Maturity and Culture: Positive on and off course behaviour, ability to control emotions, leadership skills, and ability to follow instructions.
- Squad Limits: A maximum of 36 students may be selected for the team across the competition categories (6 Males and 6 Females for Junior 13-14 Years; 6 Males and 6 Females for Intermediate 15-16 Years; 6 Males and 6 Females for Senior 17-19 Years).
- Emergency Positions: Up to 2 emergency students of each gender in each competition category may be selected and offered the opportunity to train with the selected team. If more than 1 team emergency is named in a category, the students selected will be listed in priority order.
- Fair Representation: Team balance is critical to the selection of the final squad.
Representing Victoria requires a high level of dedication and commitment from both the student athlete and their supporting family.
- Compulsory Sessions: Team members must attend all sessions deemed compulsory by Team Officials, including but not limited to training, practice matches, uniform presentation, team photos, and online professional learning sessions.
- Championship Attendance: Team members must attend all SSA Championship sessions, including the opening and closing ceremonies and the championship team experience as per the SSA Championship Attendance Policy.
- Official Authority: Parents and students must recognise that the SSA Championships are school activities, and decision-making regarding each team member's participation in those activities or preparation activities is the responsibility of the Team Officials. Families must be respectful of the role of Team Officials in making these decisions.
- Health and Safety Compliance: Team members must follow and comply with any health or safety advice that is issued.
- Parent/Carer Accompaniment: Your child must be accompanied by a parent/carer to the 2027 Championships.
- Travel and Accommodation Costs: The accompanying parent/carer is responsible for organizing and paying for all travel, meals, and accommodation for themselves and their child.
- Uniform Costs: Parents/carers are responsible for purchasing the compulsory uniform, which costs approximately $350.00 to $500.00.
- Team Fees and Documentation: Parents/carers must complete and return all team documentation to the Team Manager by the due date and pay all team fees by the due date (approx. $900.00 to $1300.00).
