Team Vic Track and Field 10-12 Years Selection Guidelines
Published 27 May, 2026
School Sport Victoria (SSV) provides pathways for student athletes to play, value, and connect through high-profile sporting opportunities. Our purpose is to foster fair, inclusive, and competitive sporting experiences that link schools with the broader community, celebrating every milestone along the way.
Secure Your Pathway to the School Sport Australia Championships
Are you ready to represent Victoria on the national stage? The School Sport Australia (SSA) 10-12 Years Track and Field Championships are coming to Melbourne, Victoria, running from Sunday, 29 November to Thursday, 3 December. This major school activity combines elite sporting competition with valuable educational excursions, paving the way for potential national selection.
Who Can Participate?
To ensure fairness and equal opportunity for all students, check your age and school eligibility guidelines:
Age Eligibility: Student athletes must be 10, 11, or 12 years old as at 31 December (born in 2014, 2015, or 2016). Students turning 9 or 13 during the competition year cannot be selected.
School Membership: Selection is only open to students attending a school that is a financial member of SSV. If your school is not yet listed as a financial member, SSV will contact you directly.
Principal Endorsement: Your official selection is finalised once your school principal or delegate endorses your participation to represent your school and SSV.

How to Qualify: The Selection Process
Our selection process is designed by Team Officials to be completely fair, transparent, and highly competitive. For almost all mainstream and multiclass events, the ultimate proving ground is the School Sport Victoria State Track and Field Primary Championships.
Primary Competition Progression
Mainstream students must qualify for the State Track and Field Primary Championships by progressing sequentially through local interschool levels:
Primary District Level
Primary Division Level
Primary Region Level
SSV State Championships
Secondary School Invitation Pathway
Do you turn 12 during the competition year but attend an SSV member Secondary school (such as Year 7)? You can still chase your athletic dreams!
Eligible invitation students must register through the Team Vic Registration Platform by Friday, 16 October.
Once approved, you can compete as an invitation athlete at the State Primary Championships for Team Vic selection purposes.
Please note that while invitation athletes can secure a place in the state selection pool, they are not eligible for state championship medals or placings.
State Championship Selection Criteria

Track and Field Events
The top three performances in each eligible age group and gender category will be considered for selection. For 12-year-old categories, selectors use adjusted final results that incorporate eligible invitation student times and distances.
Eligible Selection Events:
100m and 200m sprints
800m and 1500m track events (1500m is for mainstream able-bodied athletes only)
Long Jump and High Jump (High Jump is for mainstream able-bodied athletes only)
Shot Put and Discus throw
Note: Hurdles and Triple Jump are fiercely contested at the state level; however, they are not offered at the SSA national event. No team selections occur for Hurdles or Triple Jump.
Relay Teams and Emergencies
Relay Squads: Selectors build our fast relay teams exclusively from athletes who have already qualified for the individual team squad, focusing on 100m and 200m performance results.
Emergency Places: The fourth and fifth place performances in each event are recognized as emergencies. If a qualified athlete withdraws, an emergency spot will be formally offered.
Results Publication: The selection panel reviews all data immediately after the event. Look out for the provisional team list on our website approximately five days after the championships.
Inclusive Selection: Multiclass and Combined Events
SSV is dedicated to providing equal opportunities across all ability levels. We fully recognise and celebrate our multiclass competitors. Learn more about multiclass opportunities.
Multiclass Selection
Multiclass Categories: The top three boys and girls placegetters across 10, 11, and 12-year-old brackets will earn selection. Places are calculated fairly using the official Australian Athletics Baseline percentages.
Multiclass Discus Trial: Discus selection takes place via a designated invitation event during the State Championships. It is not a medal event. You must register via the Team Vic Registration Platform by Friday, 16 October. The field is limited to the top 6 verified entries per group.
Classification: All multiclass competitors must possess an official disability sport classification. Check out our online classification guide to find your sport class.
Combined Event Selection
The Combined Event does not hold a track trial on 29 October. Selectors will select up to three boys and three girls per age group (10, 11, and 12 years) by reviewing verified historical data.
Registration Deadline: Interested athletes must log their details by Friday, 16 October on the Team Vic Registration Platform.
Criteria Considered: Selectors evaluate performances from the Little Athletics Victoria State Combined Event Championships, Athletics Victoria Championships, the previous School Sport Australia Championships, and local SSV level results.
Important Note: Selectors do not accept local training or centre data. You must submit official, verified competition results.
Accepting a coveted spot in the Team Vic squad means embracing key responsibilities as a proud ambassador for Victorian school sport:
Mandatory Attendance: You must attend every scheduled preparation event, including training camps, practice sessions, uniform presentations, team photos, and online professional learning modules.
Parent/Carer Supervision: Selected athletes must travel and stay with a parent or carer. Parents and carers manage all travel, accommodation, and meal arrangements throughout the national event.
Compulsory Team Uniform: Team members must purchase the official Victoria state uniform, which costs approximately $300.00 to $450.00.
Fees and Forms: Return all signed paperwork and complete the team fees (approximately $800.00 to $1300.00) by the specified deadlines.
Official Decisions: Respect that the championships are official Department of Education activities. Team Officials carry full responsibility for determining team management, participation strategies, and event preparation.
