Team Vic Team Official Position Description

Are you ready to help Victorian students reach their sporting potential? School Sport Victoria (SSV) invites passionate teachers and sports professionals to apply for Team Official roles. By joining Team Vic, you will lead state representative teams at the School Sport Australia (SSA) Championships, providing students with life-changing opportunities to compete at a national level. 

As a Team Vic Official, you will play an important role in creating positive sporting experiences, supporting student wellbeing, and helping Victorian student athletes perform at their highest level.

These appointments are volunteer positions and provide valuable professional learning and leadership opportunities. 

About the Role 

Team Officials provide operational, management and coaching leadership throughout the Team Vic program. This may include: 

• Assisting with the planning and delivery of selection trials. 
• Selecting students in accordance with Team Vic policies and procedures. 
• Providing feedback to participating students. 
• Preparing and supporting teams leading into national championships. 
• Providing supervision, leadership and duty of care for students. 
• Attending and supporting teams at School Sport Australia Championships. 
• Working collaboratively with School Sport Victoria staff, School Sport Australia officials and fellow Team Vic officials. 
• Completing relevant administrative and operational requirements before, during and after championships.  

All Team Officials play a vital role in maintaining a safe, inclusive and positive environment for students and are expected to uphold the values and expectations of School Sport Victoria and the Victorian Department of Education. 

Team Official Roles 

While all Team Officials share responsibility for student wellbeing, supervision and team leadership, specific responsibilities differ depending on the role. 

Coach/Team Coach 

Team Coaches provide technical leadership and athlete development throughout the Team Vic program. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Lead and support team preparation and training activities. 
• Assist with selection trials and team selection processes. 
• Support student athlete development and performance. 
• Provide feedback and guidance to team members. 
• Promote positive behaviours, sportsmanship and team culture. 
• Lead and support team performance at School Sport Australia Championships. 
• Work collaboratively with Team Managers, Sports Trainers and SSV staff.  

Minimum Requirement 

• Current National Coaching Accreditation Scheme (NCAS) Level 1 qualification or equivalent in the relevant sport.  

Team Manager 

Team Managers provide organisational, administrative and operational leadership to support the successful delivery of the Team Vic program. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Coordinate team administration and documentation. 
• Support communication with students, parents/carers and School Sport Victoria. 
• Assist with team logistics, travel and championship requirements. 
• Ensure students meet uniform, travel and administrative expectations. 
• Support student welfare, behaviour and team culture. 
• Assist coaches and SSV staff to ensure a positive championship experience for all participants.  

Minimum Requirement 

• Current First Aid qualification.  

Sports Trainer 

Sports Trainers support athlete health, wellbeing and physical preparation throughout the Team Vic program. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Provide first response support for injuries and illness. 
• Assist with athlete preparation and recovery. 
• Support player welfare and risk management processes. 
• Maintain relevant treatment and medical records. 
• Work collaboratively with coaches, managers and School Sport Victoria staff to support student wellbeing.  

Minimum Requirement 

• Current Sports Trainer accreditation or equivalent 

Eligibility Requirements 

Applicants must also hold one of the following: 

Teachers 

• Current Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration. 

Non-Teachers 

• Current Working with Children Check (WWCC).

• Strong communication and teamwork skills. 
• Leadership experience in school, community or representative sport. 
• Knowledge of their sport and athlete development. 
• The ability to represent Team Vic and School Sport Victoria professionally 

Key Selection Criteria 

As part of your application, you must provide responses addressing the following selection criteria. 

1. Victorian Public Sector Values 

Demonstrated commitment to the Victorian Public Sector Values and the principles that underpin safe, inclusive and ethical practice.  

2. Teamwork and Collaboration 

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.  

3. Sport-Specific Experience 

Demonstrated coaching and/or management experience in the relevant sport at school, community, representative or higher levels.  

4. Leadership of Student Athletes 

Demonstrated leadership in supporting, developing and managing student athletes.  

5. Knowledge of School Sport Australia Championships 

Demonstrated knowledge of the rules, regulations and expectations of School Sport Australia Championships. 

Important Information 

Before applying, please note: 

• Attendance at the relevant School Sport Australia Championship is a requirement of the role. 
• Championships are generally held interstate and may require approximately one week away from work and personal commitments. 
• All Team Officials must comply with Department of Education, School Sport Victoria and School Sport Australia policies and procedures. 
• Teacher appointments require Principal endorsement. 
• Team management groups must include at least one VIT-registered teacher. 
• Casual Relief Teacher (CRT) funding is available to schools supporting appointed officials. 
• The selection panel may seek information from sources beyond nominated referees as part of the selection process. 
• All Team Officials roles are voluntary and unpaid.
