Small Schools and Combined School Teams in Interschool Sport

Published 15 April, 2026

This policy sets out the requirements for small schools in Victoria to combine to enter teams in local District and Division level competitions.

Details

School Sport Victoria (SSV) is responsible for the organisation and administration of school sport for members schools at the Primary and Secondary levels. SSV currently conducts State Championships in a number of core sports at Primary and Secondary levels. School Sport Victoria recognises that there are schools with very small enrolments that may prevent them from participating in School Sport Victoria interschool teams events. This policy is to allow these schools to combine to maximise participation opportunities for all students. This policy will form part of the SSV General Conditions of Competition.

Combined School Teams

Schools from within the same Primary District or same Secondary Division, with a combined enrolment of no more than 300 students, can enter District (Primary only), Division, Region and State competitions as a combined representative team. This applies to:

  • All team sports
  • Secondary Cross Country teams events
  • Swimming Relay Teams
  • Track and Field Relay Teams

Combined School Teams may progress through all levels of competition similar to individual schools.

To Qualify as a Combined School Team:

  • The schools are required to affiliate, as Full or Associate members, with School Sport Victoria as separate schools
  • The schools must come from the same Primary District or Secondary Division
  • The schools must have a combined enrolment of no more than 300 students

Under this policy, schools may enter competitions as an individual school team or as a combined school team.
