Secondary Competition Rules

• Match Format

  Consult the SSV website or contact the relevant Coordinator for Region and Division match formats. State Format: Split Round Robin and State Final.

  State Match Format

  • Seniors, Intermediates, Year 7 & 8: Matches consist of 2 x 15-minute halves with a 2-minute interval.
  • Shot Clock: A 24-second shot clock will not be used.
  • Timing: The clock stops on all whistles only during the last three minutes of the second half.
  • Time-outs: Each team is allowed one time-out per half. No time-outs are permitted during the last minute of the first half.

  State Match Schedule A Pre-Championships Briefing for all teams occurs before the first round. Refer to the Basketball Draw on the SSV website for the schedule.

  State Round Robin Winner Points: 4 for a win, 2 for a draw, 0 for a loss. If two teams are equal, the head-to-head match result determines the winner. If that match was a draw, or if more than two teams are tied, the winner is decided by percentage (total points for divided by total points against).

  State Final Winner If teams are tied at the end of the final, the game is extended by 3-minute periods until a result is reached.

  Competitions adhere to the SSV ‘General Conditions of Competition’, ‘Codes of Conduct’, and ‘Participant Behaviour Policy’.

  • Students cannot play in both a girls’ team and a boys/mixed team in the same sport.
  • Competition levels chosen at Division level remain binding through to Region and State levels.

• Team Size

  • Maximum of 12 players per day.
  • 12 SSV medallions and 1 coach medallion are awarded to placegetters.

• Game Specific Rules

  Conducted under FIBA Rules as interpreted by Basketball Victoria unless otherwise stated.

  • Fouls: Players are removed upon receiving 5 personal fouls. Two shots are awarded on the 9th team foul.
  • 3-Point Line: Year 7 and Year 8 competitions use the inside 3-point line.
  • Goal Post Padding: Required for outdoor courts with dual netball/basketball towers.

  No Zone Defence (Year 7 Only) Man-to-man defence is compulsory for the entire game. Zone defence is prohibited.

  • Teams may use full or half-court press but must assume man-to-man positioning once the ball enters the half-court.
  • Penalties: 1st violation: Warning; 2nd violation: Offensive team receives a baseline throw-in; 3rd violation: Technical foul awarded to the coach.

• Officials

  Each school must supply a competent scorer and timekeeper. SSV appoints referees for State Finals.

• Dress Code

  Singlets/tops must be the same design and colour, legally numbered 00-99. Shorts must be the same design and colour with no pockets. Players in shorts with pockets cannot take the court. Uniform violations incur a 5-point penalty per player (maximum 20 points per game).

  Teams over 10 minutes late without notice may be penalised one point for every minute late.

• Equipment

  Equipment Teams must provide:

  • Warm-up Basketballs:
  • All Girls and Year 7 Boys: Size 6
  • Year 8, Intermediate, and Senior Boys: Size 7
  • First Aid: A first aid kit and sports tape. (SSV First Aid Responders do not perform strapping).
  • Personnel: A competent scorer.

  Note: An up-to-date team sheet with uniform numbers must be handed to the convener on match day.
