Victorian School Sports Awards Selection Criteria



INDIVIDUAL SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD (SPORTING BLUE)

Government Primary School students may be nominated for an Individual Sporting Blue Award for outstanding achievement in the following key sports:
Australian Rules Football, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Softball, Swimming and Tennis.

Government Secondary School students may be nominated for an Individual Sporting Blue Award for outstanding achievement in the following key sports:
Australian Rules Football, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Softball, Squash, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

Multi Class students may nominate in Cross Country, Swimming and Track and Field. Multi Class students may be eligible for an overall Individual Sporting Award, this will be at the selectors discretion. 

Nominations for any sport not listed above, should use the “Outstanding Sporting Achievement” in the dropdown list of the Online Nomination Form. Ensure only one sport per nomination form.
·  Nominees should include evidence of school and sporting leadership activities.
·  Nominations may be made by Principals, school sports coordinators, SSV District Coordinators, SSV Division Coordinators, SSV Region Coordinators, Team Officials, Local Clubs or State Sporting Associations.
·  Sporting achievements, in most instances, would need to be at National, or State level. International experiences should also be noted.
·  Students must be enrolled in a Government school in the year of nomination.
·  All nominations must carry the endorsement of the principal of the Government school attended.
·  Awards can only be attained once in any given sport at primary and once at secondary level.

LINDSAY GAZE OUTSTANDING SPORTS LEADERSHIP AWARD

Lindsay Gaze is an icon of Australian sport, particularly the sport of basketball. He was a member of the Australian team as a player and a coach for 7 Olympic Games, 1960-1984 and a coach of the Australian team for the FIBA World Championships, 1974-1994. Lindsay has been instrumental in supporting and promoting sport at both the elite and grassroots level, including community and school sport.

VicHealth is proud to support the annual Lindsay Gaze Outstanding Sports Leadership in the promotion of community and school sport. 

CRITERIA

The Lindsay Gaze Award will be presented to a student who demonstrates outstanding leadership in sport, in school and the community. This may be as a player, coach, umpire, administrator, or a combination of these roles, in one or more sports. Not specifically the sport of basketball.

Nominees to show evidence of some / all of the following points:
·    Increasing participation / opportunities in school and community sport
·    Increasing player / umpire / coach skill level in particular sports
·    Displaying leadership through team coaching, management or mentoring others.
·    Promoting / participating in  meaningful and inclusive opportunities with community organisations /  clubs.
·    Involvement in the organisation / preparation and participation of school or community teams in local / regional or state competitions.

Nominations may be made by Principals, school sports coordinators, SSV District Coordinators, SSV Division Coordinators, SSV Region Coordinators, Team Officials, Local Clubs or State Sporting Associations.

All nominations must carry the endorsement of the principal of the school where the nominee attends or volunteers and be endorsed by a representative of the relevant community sport organization.

OUTSTANDING SPORTING ACHIEVEMENT

Students may be nominated for an Outstanding Sporting Achievement Award for outstanding achievement in any sport. This category is for sports  / events including both school sport and non school sport events. This award will be made to one primary student girl or boy and one secondary student girl or boy.

Nominations may be made by principals, sports coordinators, primary/secondary sports associations or state sporting associations.

Students’ sporting conduct needs to meet the principles outlined in School Sport Australia’s ‘Fair Play in School Sport’ policy, specifically in relation to displaying appropriate qualities of sportsmanship.

Sporting achievements, in most instances, would need to be at National level. International experiences should also be noted. Evidence of achievements must be accurate and will be checked against state / national/ international results.

Students must be enrolled in a Government school in the year of nomination.
All nominations must carry the endorsement of the principal of the school attended.
Awards can only be attained once in any given sport / category at primary and secondary level.
Sporting achievements need not be restricted to school sport fixtures.
Nominees should include evidence of leadership activities promoting school / community sport (where applicable).

OUTSTANDING TEACHER CONTRIBUTION AWARD

Teachers may be nominated for an Outstanding Teacher Contribution Award for their outstanding contribution to School Sport. The award will be made to one Primary Teacher and one Secondary teacher.
The Victorian School Sports Awards recognise outstanding achievement in the key sports categories;

PRIMARY

Australian Rules Football, Athletics, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Softball, Students with a Disability, Swimming and Tennis.


SECONDARY

Australian Rules Football, Athletics, Badminton, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Cross Country, Diving, Football, Golf, Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Softball, Squash, Students with a Disability, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis and Volleyball.

Nominations may be made by Principals, school sports coordinators, SSV District Coordinators, SSV Division Coordinators, SSV Region Coordinators, Team Officials, Local Clubs or State Sporting Associations.
Teachers must be a member of staff in a Government school in the year of nomination.
All nominations must carry the endorsement of the Principal of the school attended.

OUTSTANDING SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP


This award is presented to a school that has developed successful and sustainable partnerships with their local sporting community, to increase opportunities for students and teachers to participate in sport, as a player, as a coach, as an umpire or administrator.

Partnerships may include the sharing of resources, facilities and personnel.

OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTION AWARD

A parent, coach or volunteer may be nominated for an Outstanding Community Contribution Award for their outstanding contribution to school sport and to developing strong links to community sport.  An award will be presented to one parent, coach or volunteer at the primary level and at the secondary level.

Nominees to show evidence of some / all of the following points:
 ·    Increasing participation in physical activity and school sport
·    Increasing students skill level in particular sports
·    Increasing student knowledge of rules of the game and providing umpiring opportunities
·    Promoting meaningful and inclusive opportunities with community organisations /  clubs.

Nominations may be made by principals, school sports coordinators, SSV district, division, region officials, or state sporting associations.
All nominations must carry the endorsement of the principal of the school where the majority of the volunteering is undertaken.
