Increasing Access: Multiclass School Sport Victoria Opportunities

At School Sport Victoria, we believe school sport is for everyone. It builds confidence, fosters social connections, and improves overall wellbeing.

What is Multiclass?

Multiclass is designed for students with physical, intellectual, or sensory impairments. Using a classification scoring system, students’ sporting results are compared against world standards for their specific impairment, ensuring a fair and level playing field for all.

Students can participate in multiclass pathways in interschool sport across primary and secondary levels in:

  • Swimming: 50m freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly.
  • Track & Field: 100m, 200m, and 800m track; long jump and shot put.
  • Cross Country: 2000m (Primary) and 3000m (Secondary).

In addition, bowls is available for students of all abilities.

For emerging athletes, the Team Vic state representative program offers multiclass opportunities in swimming, track and field, cross country, aquathlon, and triathlon.

How to Get Started

  1. Participate Locally: Students do not need a classification for District or Division levels. We encourage everyone to get involved!
  2. Get Classified: Classification is required for Region, State, and National events. It is open to students with physical, intellectual, or vision impairments, as well as those who are transplantees, deaf or hard of hearing.
  3. Start Early: The classification process can take several months; we recommend starting as early as Year 3 or 4.
  4. Contact Your School: Speak with your PE teacher or Sports Coordinator to get involved in the School Sport Victoria pathway.

Why Participate? Physically active students show improved classroom focus and resilience while finding a supportive community of peers.
