Virtual Cross Country

Built on the success of the 2020 Virtual Cross Country event, SSV is delighted to provide this great opportunity again in 2021. Victorian primary and secondary students can take part in any way they would like - they can run or walk.

Students can run or walk for a new personal best or for fun and fitness. The main aim is for students to get out and give it a go. Every meter run by a student will earn virtual points for their school. Students will be given the option to submit their performance, but if they wish they also now have the additional option to not have their performance made public. #SSVVXC

School Sport and its impact by Peter Ray 🥇🎾🏏🏀⛹️‍♀️

Sport has always been a big part of mine and my mate’s lives.

We won our first Basketball state title in Grade 6 while at Bulleen Primary School. It was such a thrill.

Most of us went on to Templestowe High.  Making the school team was such an achievement as we had 10 state representatives trying out for eight positions on the Junior basketball team. Clearly two were not successful!

We won four State Championships (two in footy, two in basketball) while in Form 3 (Year 9) to HSC (Year 12).

We have recently started getting together annually, which with deteriorating health for some, has become even more special.

Back in those days, the winners received nothing but a paper certificate and so recently I arranged for State Championship medals for the team.  The excitement from finally receiving recognition was amazing.

As for me, I went on to become a Phys. Ed. teacher and involved in SSV as a District Coordinator, Division Coordinator, Region Coordinator, State selector, State Coach and, most importantly of all, School Sport coordinator where I still see the excitement in a kids eyes when competing and feeling success for the first time!

My message to all involved at SSV is never underestimate how important giving kids a chance to succeed and measure themselves against the best is. Character developing!

Peter Ray, Physical Education Teacher (Sale area)
