Most sport oriented primary school students are trying a whole range of different sports through school, some they enjoy and some they love. For the students that love golf the primary years are the start of an exciting journey into this great game. Most start learning the basic movements of the swing, some are taking group lessons at their local golf club, and a few are creating extravagant chipping games around the practice putting green. For the competitors of today's School Sport Victoria Primary State Final however it is clear that their journey into the game is definitely in fast forward mode.
On a near perfect day for golf the scorers hut was set and ready to see some low scores, however they didn't expect what was about to unfold in the chase for the boys title. Rupert Toomey (Sacred Heart Parish Primary) finished his round on a score of 7-under 64, a round that included a hole in one on the 8th and a chip in birdie. His card was proceesed by the scorers and Rupert leaped out in front by 5 shots ahead of clubhouse leader Bailey Goodall (Orrvale Primary) after his round of 2-under 69. In a matter of minutes though Harrison Gomez (Holy Rosary Primary) changed everything when his card was returned, counted, and confirmed for a 9-under round of 62. A round that included no bogeys and a 29 total for the backnine. Harrison was also crowned champion in 2017 and now holds claim to the only boy to go back to back in the events history. With Harrison another year to go in the event we might see something magical in 2019.
In the girls section it was Molly McLean (Rye Primary) improving on her second place in 2017 with a win in 2018. Molly didn't have the ideal lead up to the event with a back injury hampering her preparation and causing her to limit shots to irons only. A round of 4-over 75 without using a single driver or 3 wood was super impressive. Molly did however have some close challengers with Portia Hall (Beaconhills College) only a single shot behind with a 5-over 76. Finishing in third place was Millie Cassidy (Maryborough Education Centre) with a 9-over round of 80.
