Girls Leadership Forum

Girls Leadership Forum
28/11/2017

So much maturity was shown at the Year 7 & 8 Girls’ Leadership Forum run by Cricket Victoria in partnership with School Sport Victoria.  The discussions, the behaviour and the questions asked impressed the facilitators, confirming the girls’ selected  by the schools were certainly the right choice.  The day included challenging and thought provoking discussion around the topic of leadership.  120 girls from across Victoria gathered at Melbourne Girls’ College, the ideal venue for this annual event.

In its third year, the leadership forum is inspiring girls to be their best in their own schools, sporting community and family environments.  You would be forgiven for thinking this annual girl’s leadership forum is isolated to one day per year, in fact the leadership forum has online modules that each of the girls complete prior to attending the day.  According to the girls, the online component of the leadership forum is enriching in and of itself.

Today’s panel consisted of Sonya Thompson, Rowie Webster, and Isabella Dymalovski.  They all shared insightful leadership lessons that were received as challenging thoughts for all who attended.

As a London Olympic bronze medallist, Rowie is certainly living proof of her own self-proclaimed message - “I’m an ordinary person trying to achieve extraordinary things.  That’s what motivates me.”

Isabella Dymalovski as the youngest panel member was impressive, it wasn’t until part way in to the session that panel facilitator Maddie Clements informed the audience that Isabella was only 15 years old.  It was clear that this new information surprised the audience because of the gasp that echoed across the room.  Incredibly, at such a young age, Isabella has somehow managed to launch a business called “Luv UR self” endeavouring to encourage girls to feel confident about themselves.

Sonya shared from her own sporting background, how she has incorporated lessons learned on the field and implemented them into her role as Head of Female Cricket at Cricket Victoria. “Everyone has different strengths, so don’t just work on the things you are weak at, build on your strengths.  Understand what drives you so you can own that for you and your life.”
